How to select tent gear for your next camping trip

When you are camping out, your tent is your home away from home and your only protection from foul weather, so it’s critical to select just the right tent gear for your particular needs.

Thanks to the development of today’s new high tech materials and designs, there are literally dozens of different choices when it comes to selecting tent camping gear. Whether your purpose is backpacking or tent camping at a ational park or state campground, a solo excursion high into the mountains or a weekend family camping outing, your selection of tent gear needs to reflect these types of variables. It’s also important to decide which season or seasons you will be using the gear--tents today can be made to withstand temperatures below zero, heavy rains or snow and winds up to 100 mph, but you might only need your tent to withstand a gentle rain at 60 degrees.

To simplify your decision, think about your need for tent camping gear in terms of its length/width and weight, sturdiness and essential features. Ultralight is a term that is equated with desirability in tent gear, but not everyone really needs it. While it’s true that you will get the most innovate featherweight materials, fibers, and meshes, unless you are hiking a distance like the Appalachian Trail or you are out to break a speed-hiking record, you will be better served by more middle-of-the-road tent camping gear.

Qualities such as larger, heavier and thicker in tent gear mean more space for you or others, a place to store stuff, more abrasion-resistant materials, and thicker walls between you and possible bad weather. Tent size--for instance: 1-person, 2-person, 3- or 4-person tents are given this designation based on how many one-person sleeping pads can fit next to one another without overlapping across the width of the tent.

Thus, a 2-person tent doesn’t have room for much more than two people lying side by side. If you are going to use your new tent gear in a campground and not be lugging it up a mountainous trail every day, you will undoubtedly find that a 3-4 person tent for two people means you have room for your stuff and you won’t be bothered by the fellow camper who tosses, turns and kicks in his sleep. And, if you happen to be six-feet or taller, carefully study the length, width and height of the tent before you buy it. Peaks vary considerably in height and a short center peak is not the best choice for everybody.

Tent gear is made of different weight materials and has different coatings that affect how strong it is, how long it lasts, and what kind of weather it’s going to withstand. For example, the tent floor, body, and rain fly made with a 30-40 denier material is lighter but not as strong or weather resistant as those made with 70-80 grade denier material. So, when selecting tent gear, choose your tent based on which seasons you will be camping out and how often you will be using it. A tent used one weekend a year doesn’t need to be as well-made as one used every weekend in almost every season. Obviously, if you plan on camping in the mountains in the winter, a four-season tent is in order, along with wind and temperature ratings. There are circumstances where selecting the right tent gear can mean the difference between life and death.

In addition, tents come with features you may or may not need, such as one or two doors, different quantities of gear storage pockets, varying amounts of mesh for ventilation--you definitely don’t want a tent that sweats, short and long rain flies--you want one that covers the entire tent, and vestibules--handy for keeping out dirt or letting your dog dry off. Unless you are purchasing a tent in the high-end price range, don’t assume it is completely waterproof. Many times the seams are waterproof but you will need to apply a waterproof spray to the rest of the tent before you begin your camping trip.

These are just a few of the considerations to take into account when selecting tent camping gear. Make sure to buy your tent gear from someone who will answer any questions you may have, whether you are buying from a brick and mortar store or online. Camping outdoors can be lots of fun, and many times having just the right tent can make all the difference.
