Muzzleloading is the term used to describe the sport, or pastime of firing muzzleloading guns. Muzzleloading guns, both antique and reproduction, are used for target shooting, hunting, historical re-enactment and to research the history of the muzzleloader.

The sport began in the US in the 1930's just as the original users and manufacturers of muzzleloading firearms were dying out. Muzzleloading, as a sport, got a boost in the 1960's and 1970's, and now an industry manufacturing working reproductions of muzzleloading firearms exists in the United States. This thriving industry is supported by The American National Muzzle Loading Association which holds yearly tournaments.

A muzzleloader is any firearm into which the projectile (bullet or solid lead ball) and the charge (powder) is loaded from the muzzle of the gun. (the open end of the barrel) As used today, the term muzzleloading most commonly applies to black powder small arms. It usually involves the use of gun powder, a projectile, as well as an igniter or primer.

To load the muzzleloader, gunpowder is put in first. This can be in the form of loose powder, a pre-measured bag or paper packet of gunpowder. The gunpowder used is typically blackpowder. Next Wadding, made from felt, cloth or card, is placed in the barrel. In muzzleloading rifles firing round ball. a lubricated patch of fabric is wrapped around the ball which grips the rifling and promotes spin on the ball. Last to be loaded is the projectile, most often a solid lead ball. A ramrod is used to push the wadding and ball down to make sure they are firmly against the powder.

The muzzleloader dates from the 15th century. Although modified and improved, many of the major parts are still in use. One of the earliest muzzleloaders was the Flintlock, a major step in rifle technology, invented in the 1600's. The final progression in the history of muzzleloading occurred in the 1800's when the percussion system was invented, allowing instantaneous detonation for the first time. Today, there are approximately 3.5 million muzzleloading shooters in the U.S.
