Knives and the outdoorsman are meant for each other. Knives and other sharp bladed instruments (axes, saws & shears, machetes) are as important to that outdoor adventure as is the tent or backpack.

The knife is a tool that can be used as a weapon. Its origins date as far back as two and a half million years ago when knives were shaped by flaking a hard rock such as flint into a sharp point.

Modern knives are made from many different materials such as alloy tool steels, carbon fiber, ceramics, and titanium. Today, there are many custom knife makers and collectors that often pioneer new materials in knives. Carbon steel can be very sharp, hold its edge well, and easy to sharpen, but is subject to rust and stains. Stainless steel does not have as sharp an edge as carbon steel, but is highly resistant to corrosion. High carbon stainless steel blades do not discolor or stain, and maintain a sharp edge. Titanium is lighter, more wear resistant and more flexible than steel. Ceramic blades are incredibly hard, lightweight and will maintain a sharp edge for months or years with no maintenance al all. Ceramic will not corrode.

Knives are either fixed blade or folding blade. Fixed blade knives are usually stronger because the blade extends into the handle and have no moving parts. The folding knife usually has a locking mechanism when the knife blade is open to prevent the blade from accidentally closing causing injury.
