Flashlights & lighting in the form of lanterns, headlamps, standard flashlights, and tactical & professional flashlights & lighting have lit our way since 1896 when Joshua Lionel Cowen invented a decorative lighting fixture for potted plants which contained a metal tube housing, a light bulb, and a dry cell battery. Flashlights & lighting did not occur sooner because the electric battery and incandescent light bulb had not yet been invented.

The standard flashlight contains a small incandescent light bulb, a reflector, batteries, and power switch. In 2001, the LED flashlight became available. LED's can be much more efficient, have a much longer life than incandescent, and can survive rougher treatment than conventional light bulbs.

Tactical & professional flashlights & lighting are used in conjunction with a firearm to aid low light target id. Hunters also use tactical & professional flashlights & lighting to identify game and light their way at night. Some tactical & professional flashlights & lighting are designed to be mounted on rifles for hands free use, while others are specifically designed to be used with handguns which require both hands to use the handgun and light. Law enforcement and the military were the first to use tactical flashlights & lighting.

Lanterns predate the invention of electricity and was the main source of light in early America. Lanterns are also used for signaling and are widely used for camping and other outdoor activities.

The kerosene lantern, also known as a "hurricane lantern" was commonly used in the 1800's to light rural homes, barns and outdoor paths. Today, they are mostly decorative but still used by campers, and other outdoor adventurers.

Modern fueled lanterns, such as propane and butane, have been widely used by campers but are slowly being replaced by battery-powered fluorescent lamp models due in part to safety concerns and also because of the ease of transport. Liquid fuel lanterns are still popular where the fuel is easily obtained.

Another flashlights & lighting design is the Headlamp. The headlamp is worn on the head for hands-free operation. Powerful headlamps, mounted on helmets, have been used by miners for many years. Today, there are general purpose headlamps with fabric straps used widely by hunters, cavers, and campers.
