What to Look for when Purchasing Crossbow Equipment
Every year more and more people decide to purchase crossbow equipment for the first time. Because crossbow hunting is becoming
more popular there are new companies entering the crossbow market, and established companies like Horton, Barnett, Excalibur Crossbows, and TenPoint Crossbows are adding more choices.
All of these developments are good for hunters. But, if you are just purchasing your first crossbow package, you might be overwhelmed with all the new choices. Here are a few things to think about when venturing into the area of crossbow shooting for the first time.
If you have friends who have crossbows, ask them if you can try it out. You will be able to get an idea of what is involved, and they should be able to give you a few tips from their own experience.
The weight of the crossbow and the pounds of the draw are both considerations when purchasing a crossbow package. The lightest
crossbow might not be best for a beginner as a little more weight will make the crossbow steadier when firing. Weight also makes for more accuracy. What kind of hunting will you be doing? Heavy crossbows are like heavy rifles in that if you are
going to be moving around all day, the weight can wear on you, but if you have found a nice little spot to sit and wait, the
heaviness of your crossbow equipment won't matter as much.
A lot of older hunters are now starting to use crossbows because hunting with bows becomes more difficult as you age. Some states, where crossbows are illegal, allow hunters in their 70s and 80s to use crossbows, and most states allow it if someone is too handicapped to hunt otherwise. If you are among these groups probably the lighter the crossbow, the better.
As for pounds of draw, don't think that bigger is necessarily better. For one thing, the more pounds of draw, the harder it will be to successfully draw the crossbow into a firing position. A 150 lb. crossbow is the standard draw and the one that hunters use for deer. Many hunters also use a 150 lb. crossbow for small animals such as rabbits and squirrels, although a smaller 125 lb. draw is recommended by some experts for small animals. Crossbows for a caribou or a similar size larger animal should be 175 lb., and for the largest animals of all such as bear, a 200 lb. might be in order. The last thing you want is to have a large bear rushing you at 40 feet.
Today you can get recurve or compound crossbows, the same as with traditional bows. Many people choose the compound crossbow for speed but that is really a personal decision based on what you are hunting. Recurve crossbows are also pretty fast and offer a simpler design. Don't skimp on your scope either when choosing your crossbow package. Hunters switching from rifles to crossbows frequently want a crosshair scope because that is what they are familiar with, but a red dot scope is highly recommended, reliable and accurate. Get a good quality scope so that you don't have to replace it later.
The last thing to consider when purchasing crossbow equipment is: should I get the crossbow and accessories separately or to get a crossbow package which will have everything you need to get started. A crossbow package is a good choice as there is usually a significant savings to be had.
